The Linden Centre, Dali

Yunnan

Set in the quiet village of Xizhou on the shores of Erhai Lake, The Linden Centre is a beautifully restored Bai heritage courtyard that offers a deeply authentic stay in China’s Yunnan Province. Originally built in the 1940s as a merchant’s home, this architectural landmark has been sensitively renovated into a boutique retreat that celebrates the region’s culture, community, and traditional craftsmanship. With its carved wooden gates, stone-paved courtyards and mountain views, the Linden Centre provides a refined and intimate window into village life.

Accommodation

The Linden Centre offers a small collection of individually styled rooms spread across several courtyards. Each room features original Bai design elements such as carved wooden beams, lattice windows and decorative tiling, alongside modern comforts like underfloor heating and spacious en-suite bathrooms. The result is simple, elegant and authentic.

Food & Drink

Meals are shared at long wooden tables in the central courtyard or the upstairs dining room, with views over tiled rooftops to the mountains beyond. The menu focuses on fresh Yunnanese dishes made with locally sourced produce, many from the on-site garden or surrounding farms. Cooking classes and market visits can be arranged on request.

Activities

Guests are encouraged to explore the rhythm of local life, from early morning walks through Xizhou’s cobbled lanes to visits with village artisans. Tie dye workshops, traditional Bai tea ceremonies, and bicycle rides around Erhai Lake offer immersive, low-key experiences. The staff can also arrange guided hikes in the Cangshan Mountains, or cultural excursions to Dali Old Town and neighbouring villages.

Sustainability

The Linden Centre is a model of community-based preservation and sustainable tourism. All restoration work was done in collaboration with local craftsmen, and the hotel maintains close ties with the village through employment, cultural education, and local sourcing. A low-impact ethos underpins all operations, from water use to waste management.

Children

Children are warmly welcomed. The spacious courtyards, outdoor activities, and hands-on workshops make this an enriching choice for culturally curious families. Interconnecting rooms are available.

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit is during the dry, mild months of March to May and September to November, when skies are clear and the landscapes are lush.

How to Get There

The Linden Centre is a 40-minute drive from Dali Airport or around 2.5 hours from Lijiang by car. It can also be accessed via high-speed rail from Kunming.
