Late September and October are my favourite months for North India. It’s when I start nudging clients to look again at Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur, before the festive rush begins.
The monsoon has settled the dust, the air feels fresher, and temperatures are far more manageable. Rajasthan feels energised without being overwhelming. It’s that sweet spot before peak season, with warm days, cooler evenings, and buzzy but less touristy cities.
If you are considering India this autumn, here is what I recommend.
However many photos you’ve seen, the Taj Mahal at sunrise still takes clients’ breath away in real life. The marble shifts colour as the sun rises and at that pre-dawn hour you avoid the main crowds. We arrange early entry and a guide who understands pacing – someone who can explain the history, but also recognises when to step back and let you take it in. Done properly, it’s calm, beautiful and genuinely moving, rather than rushed or chaotic.
Start with sunrise at the Taj Mahal
Jaipur: heritage by day, Bar Palladio by night
In Jaipur, I recommend Taj Rambagh Palace. Once the Maharaja’s residence, it has wide lawns, high ceilings and enough space to properly reset after navigating the old city. In autumn, the gardens are particularly lovely in the late afternoon, and the Polo Bar is a perfect pre-dinner stop. Amber Fort works well in the morning when it’s cooler, though we adjust timing to suit your pace. We work with guides who know how to tailor your experience, whether you want architectural detail, political history, or simply the key stories delivered efficiently without being overloaded. In the evening, I suggest drinks or dinner at Bar Palladio, a very cool bar and Italian restaurant set in a garden pavilion. Its vibrant blue interiors and strong negronis make it a stylish change of pace after a day of forts and bazaars.
The ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur is globally known for its jewellery, but wandering without introductions can quickly become overwhelming. We arrange private access to trusted workshops so you can properly understand the craftsmanship behind kundan and meenakari pieces, and buy with confidence. In Udaipur, for fabrics and artefacts, I recommend Ganesh Emporium. It’s well curated and reliable, ideal if you want quality without the hard sell. Clients looking for textiles, antiques or decorative pieces tend to do very well here.
Shop with direction, not guesswork
Udaipur: slow it down
Udaipur is where I deliberately ease the pace. After Jaipur’s energy, the lake setting feels calmer and more restorative. One dinner at Ambrai is always a good idea. It overlooks Lake Pichola and faces the Taj Lake Palace, perfectly positioned for sunset. It’s simple, atmospheric and doesn’t try too hard, which is part of its appeal. Beyond that, I build in breathing space: a boat ride at dusk, a relaxed breakfast overlooking the water, or time by the pool without a packed schedule.
For clients who enjoy wildlife or want contrast between cities, I sometimes weave in a stay at SUJÁN Jawai between Jodhpur and Udaipur. Leopard tracking there is conservation-led and low key. It’s a beautifully designed camp and an immersive way to experience Rajasthan’s wild landscape between the architectural highlights. Then on to Jodhpur, the beautiful blue-hued city. A rooftop dinner overlooking Mehrangarh Fort works particularly well. For more adventurous clients, zip-lining across the fort adds a completely different perspective.
Add a safari between the cities
Finish strong in Delhi
Delhi deserves time, always. With the right historian-guide, Old Delhi is fascinating – still frenetic, but far more navigable when you understand what you’re looking at. There are quieter counterpoints too, such as Humayun’s Tomb, which offers real architectural calm and space to pause. For a final evening, I almost always book Indian Accent. It remains one of the country’s best dining rooms for contemporary Indian cuisine, with consistently excellent service and a fitting place to toast the end of your trip
Autumn in Rajasthan is popular for good reason. The best palace rooms and the strongest guides book quickly once the monsoon passes and the summer heat subsides. Securing those early allows everything else to flow smoothly. North India done well isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things at the right time of day – knowing where to shop, where to dine, where to learn, and where simply to admire.
