Mandala Heartland

Mandala Heartland is an exclusive-use ger camp set within Mongolia’s central steppe, close to the historic Orkhon Valley. Surrounded by open grassland, sand dunes and low mountains, it offers a private base from which to explore both the landscape and the traditions of local Khalkh herding families. The camp operates in partnership with nearby communities, helping to support craftsmanship and supplement rural incomes. Designed for travellers seeking privacy and meaningful cultural engagement, Mandala Heartland combines traditional ger living with practical comfort in a remote setting.

Accommodation

Accommodation consists of a private cluster of handcrafted felt gers reserved entirely for your party. The master bedroom ger is furnished in traditional Mongolian style, with painted wooden furniture and handmade textiles. An adjoining heated bathroom ger includes a shower, eco loo and organic toiletries. A wood-burning stove provides warmth during cooler evenings. A separate Magic Ger functions as the main dining and living space and can be arranged for film nights or relaxed indoor evenings. Lighting and charging are solar powered, maintaining a low environmental footprint without compromising convenience.

Food & Drink

Meals focus on seasonal Mongolian ingredients, including free-range meat, fresh dairy and locally sourced produce. Traditional dishes such as handmade dumplings are prepared alongside simple, well-balanced menus designed for multi-day stays. A selection of soft drinks, local beers and house wine is available. The camp’s Gercierge team remain nearby throughout your stay, preparing meals, lighting stoves and assisting as needed while respecting your privacy.

Experiences

Experiences at Mandala Heartland reflect the surrounding landscape and community life. Horse riding and camel trekking can be arranged across the steppe and dunes, along with guided hikes in the nearby hills. Archery sessions provide insight into a skill that remains central to Mongolian heritage. Time with nomadic families offers a deeper understanding of daily life. Guests may observe or take part in herding livestock, milking animals or preparing traditional food. Visits to temples and historic sites in the Orkhon Valley can also be arranged, as well as private demonstrations of Naadam sports. All activities are privately arranged and adjusted to suit your interests.

Children are welcome, particularly those comfortable with outdoor activity and remote environments. The setting provides opportunities to learn about livestock, rural life and Mongolian traditions in an engaging and hands-on way.

Best Time to Visit

June to October offers the most favourable conditions. July is the warmest month and coincides with Naadam celebrations. September and early October are cooler and generally quieter. May is possible but can be windy.

How to Get There

Mandala Heartland is approximately four hours by road from Ulaanbaatar International Airport. Private Cessna charters are available and reduce travel time to around one hour.
